Mobile salon vans for Richmond
ProVanWorks builds mobile salon vans for nails, hair and lashes at our shop in Langley for technicians and stylists working in Richmond. Richmond sits flat and open on Lulu Island at sea level, so a salon van there spends more of the winter fighting wind and damp than snow, and every trip in or out crosses a bridge or goes through a tunnel.
How does Richmond's weather shape a salon van?
Snow is less common in Richmond than further up the Fraser Valley, but the city has little shelter. Wind blows in off the Strait of Georgia and across the farmland of east Richmond, and on a wet day a few degrees above freezing it pulls heat out of a parked van fast.
A ProVanWorks salon van has about 16 mm (5/8 inch) of insulation in the walls, roof and floor, the thickness we use for Lower Mainland vans, and a small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat. The heat moves through pipes in the floor and walls and through heat exchangers, a thermostat holds the setting, and the heater runs with the engine off. For a nail van the warm floor is the point: a pedicure client sits with bare feet for most of an hour. When Arctic air does reach the coast, the plumbing stays inside the heated van, so the footbath and sink still get hot water.
Richmond is just as exposed in summer. A van in a surface lot sits in full sun with no shade nearby, and the front fan in the cargo area runs the air conditioning.
Where do mobile salons work in Richmond?
Richmond's towers line No. 3 Road and the Canada Line, and their residents are used to services that come to them. Townhouse complexes fill much of the city between the arterial roads, and single-family streets in Steveston, Terra Nova and Seafair have driveways where a van can pull in. Hotels near the airport host wedding parties and travellers who want hair or nails before an event or a flight, and east Richmond's farms and acreages are a long way from any salon.
Steveston village's narrow streets fill up with visitors on weekends, so weekday mornings are easier there. Tower parkades are usually too low for a van with standing room. Check with the City of Richmond about parking a commercial vehicle on residential streets and setting up there.
What water and power setup suits a Richmond salon van?
A ProVanWorks nail van feeds a pedicure basin and a hand-wash sink with hot water from a fresh water reservoir in the utility area. Both drain to a grey water tank under the floor, the same size as or larger than the reservoir, and we size the tanks around how many pedicures you do in a day. Richmond's ditches drain through pump stations to the Fraser River, so grey water never goes in a ditch or a storm drain: empty it at an approved disposal point or the sanitary sewer. A hair van adds a shampoo bowl on the same system.
The nail drill, UV or LED lamp, lights, fans and climate system run from the auxiliary battery bank. It charges at Level 2 EV chargers through a J1772 inlet, and from shore power through the 50 A inlet (30 A also available) or the 20 A, 120 V inlet. Solar panels and a generator are add-ons; the generator suits farm stops far from an outlet. The mobile nail salon van page explains the pedicure basin, lighting and ventilation.
What rules apply to a mobile salon in Richmond?
Richmond is in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. Check with Vancouver Coastal Health about personal service rules for nails, hair and lashes, including how pedicure basins must be cleaned between clients, and with the City of Richmond about business licences. Tell us what they ask for and we'll build it into the van.
How does a salon van get from Langley to Richmond?
The drive is about 45 km. From the Langley shop, head west on Highway 10 or the South Fraser Perimeter Road, then cross into Richmond by the Alex Fraser Bridge and Highway 91, or through the George Massey Tunnel on Highway 99. The tunnel backs up at rush hour, so a midday pickup is easier. Most Richmond owners pick up at the shop (visits by appointment), where we go through every system with you. We can also drive the van to you, or ship it on a vehicle transport carrier. See delivery across Canada for how delivery is quoted.
Can I have a Richmond salon van built my way?
Yes. ProVanWorks builds to your own specifications, or you can choose one of our already designed systems and change what you need. The mobile salon vans page shows every layout. For a summer market or a night event where you stay in one place, a mobile beauty salon trailer is worth a look.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Richmond nail van have two pedicure chairs?
That depends on the van and the rest of the layout. Tell us how many clients you want to serve at once, and we'll show you what fits in the service room.
Does a Richmond salon van need air conditioning?
Yes, on sunny days. Richmond is flat, so a parked van rarely has shade, and nail lamps and dryers add heat inside. The front fan in a ProVanWorks van runs the A/C on the same thermostat as the heat.
