Mobile grooming vans for Edmonton groomers

ProVanWorks builds mobile grooming vans in Langley for groomers in Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park and the rest of the capital region. Edmonton winters are long and steadily cold, with cold snaps below −30 °C, so a grooming van has to keep its water, batteries and dogs warm for months at a time. The van reaches Edmonton from our BC shop over the Yellowhead Highway through Jasper.

What does a long Edmonton winter mean for a grooming van?

Edmonton's cold does not come and go the way Calgary's does with chinooks. It settles in. From late fall to early spring the temperature sits below freezing for weeks, and cold snaps push it below −30 °C. There is rarely a warm afternoon to thaw out a line that froze overnight or dry out a damp cabinet, so a van has to stay warm and dry every working day of the season.

A ProVanWorks van is built for that kind of winter. A small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat drives in-floor and in-wall heat through piping and heat exchangers around the insulated cargo area, so the floor, walls and air are all warm. An Edmonton van gets much thicker insulation than the roughly 16 mm (5/8 inch) we use for the Lower Mainland. The thermostat holds the temperature you set, and the hot water system is built to work in very low winter temperatures. The cold-weather design page explains how the pieces fit.

How do Edmonton groomers handle plug-ins and overnight parking?

Edmontonians plug in their vehicles on cold nights, and parking lots with outlets are a normal sight. A grooming van adds a second job: keeping the water system and the auxiliary battery bank above freezing until morning. If the battery bank uses lithium cells, it must not be charged below 0 °C unless warmed first, and a frozen water line can split.

In a ProVanWorks van, the water reservoir and battery bank sit in the utility area at the back, inside the insulated, heated van. How you keep them warm overnight depends on where you park and on the base van, which can be diesel, gas or electric. Ask us about the overnight setup when you request a quote. The options are leaving the heater on the thermostat (it runs with the engine off), plugging into shore power, draining the water system, or parking in a heated garage. During the day the battery bank charges from Level 2 EV chargers. See power and EV charging.

How do routes work across the Edmonton region?

Edmonton is large and flat, cut in two by the North Saskatchewan River valley. Anthony Henday Drive rings the city and links the suburbs, so a day might run from Terwillegar to St. Albert to Sherwood Park without much backtracking. Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Beaumont and Fort Saskatchewan add more stops, and acreages in Strathcona and Parkland counties mean long driveways that may not be cleared.

After big snowfalls, plowing leaves windrows along residential streets, and the City runs parking bans while crews clear them. Check with the City of Edmonton before booking curbside stops during a ban.

How does a van get from Langley to Edmonton?

The usual route goes east to Kamloops, north on Highway 5 through the North Thompson valley to Tête Jaune Cache, then east on the Yellowhead (Highway 16) through Jasper and Hinton into Edmonton. It is well over 1,000 km, with long stretches of winter driving through the mountains. The water system is protected for the trip. Ask about delivery when you request a quote, and read delivery across Canada for how that works.

Frequently asked questions

Can a ProVanWorks grooming van keep working through an Edmonton cold snap?

Yes. The heat runs through the floor and walls, the thermostat holds your setting, and the water and batteries sit inside the insulated, heated van. Keep the dog's walk from the house to the van short on the coldest days.

Does a grooming van in Edmonton need to be plugged in at night?

Usually, yes, the same as most vehicles in Edmonton during a cold snap. What exactly needs power depends on the base van, so ask about the overnight setup when you request a quote.

Does an Edmonton grooming van need air conditioning?

Yes. Edmonton summer days are long, with sun well into the evening, and hot spells are common in July and August. A ProVanWorks van has two cargo-area fans, and the front one also runs the air conditioning on the same thermostat as the heat. Read more about van fans and A/C.
