Mobile grooming vans for Victoria groomers

ProVanWorks builds mobile dog grooming vans at our shop in Langley for groomers in Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Langford, Colwood and Sidney. A Victoria van deals with rain and soaked dogs far more often than deep cold, so it needs plenty of water, a warm, dry work area and hot water that keeps up all day. The van reaches the Island on the BC Ferries crossing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.

What kind of winter does a grooming van face in Victoria?

Victoria has the mildest winters of any large Canadian city, but they are wet. From late fall into spring a dog fresh off the beach at Dallas Road usually arrives soaked and sandy. A ProVanWorks van carries a large fresh water reservoir and a separate grey water tank, and a rainy day of heavy rinsing still leaves water for the last appointment.

Temperatures between 0 and 5 °C sound easy until you put a wet dog in a cold, damp box. In a ProVanWorks van, a small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat sends heat through in-floor and in-wall piping and heat exchangers around the cargo area, and the thermostat holds the temperature you set while you dry. Warm walls and floor cut down the condensation that builds when you bathe dogs back to back, and the waterproof floor takes the drips and sand.

What happens to a grooming van when it snows in Victoria?

Snow is uncommon in Victoria, which is why it causes so much trouble. After a real snowfall, side streets on the hills of Oak Bay, Fairfield and the Highlands can stay icy for days, and one exposed fitting can freeze overnight. In a ProVanWorks van the water reservoir and auxiliary battery bank sit in the utility area at the back, inside the insulated, heated van, and the hot water system is built for very low winter temperatures. The cold-weather design page explains the layout.

How do groomers get around Greater Victoria in a grooming van?

Fernwood, James Bay and Oak Bay have narrow streets and little off-street parking, so you often park at the curb and walk the dog out. Saanich mixes suburban streets with farmland on the Peninsula, where driveways get longer. Langford and Colwood are newer and spread out, and the rush-hour drive back toward town (locals call it the Colwood Crawl) can eat into your schedule.

A ProVanWorks van carries its own heat, water and batteries, so you never run a cord or hose into a client's James Bay condo. The battery bank charges from Level 2 EV chargers, and a lunch stop near a public charger can top it up; see power and EV charging. Optional opening windows in the work area let in daylight and fresh air on mild days. Parking rules differ by municipality, so check with the City of Victoria, Saanich or Oak Bay before booking regular stops on permit-only streets.

How does a ProVanWorks van get from Langley to Victoria?

Our Langley shop is less than an hour from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. The van crosses to Swartz Bay, then runs south on the Pat Bay Highway (Highway 17) past Sidney into Victoria. Give BC Ferries the van's real height and length when you book, because tall vehicles are priced and loaded differently from cars.

You can pick up at the shop and sail home, with the water system protected for a winter crossing. If you would rather not travel, ask about delivery when you request a quote, and see delivery across Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I empty grey water from a grooming van in Victoria?

Grey water goes to the sanitary sewer or an approved disposal site, never a storm drain, because storm drains in Greater Victoria flow to the ocean and local creeks. Ask your municipality or the Capital Regional District which sites accept it.

Can I see a ProVanWorks van before buying if I live on the Island?

Yes, with a ferry trip to Langley. Email info@provanworks.com to book a time at the shop.

Does a Victoria grooming van need air conditioning?

Yes, for the warm part of summer. Victoria stays milder than the mainland, but a closed van with the dryer running still heats up in the afternoon sun. The front fan in a ProVanWorks van also runs the A/C, and the same thermostat controls heating and cooling. Read more about van fans and A/C.
