Mobile salon vans for Kelowna and the Okanagan
ProVanWorks builds mobile salon vans for hair, nails and lashes in Langley for stylists and technicians in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon and Penticton. The Okanagan has colder winters than the coast and hot, dry summers, so a salon van here needs thicker insulation, steady heat and air conditioning.
How does the Okanagan climate shape a salon van?
Through much of the winter, cloud settles over Okanagan Lake and the valley floor, and the days stay grey, damp and close to freezing. When Arctic air pushes down from the north, the valley can sit well below −10 °C for several days. A colour client sitting for two hours on one of those mornings should stay warm the whole time.
Kelowna's colder winters call for thicker insulation than the 16 mm (5/8 inch) we use on Lower Mainland vans, and ProVanWorks sets the thickness for each build. A small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat warms pipes in the floor and walls and heat exchangers around the room, and a thermostat holds the temperature with the engine off. Pedicure clients feel the warm floor under bare feet. The hot water system is built to keep working in very low winter temperatures, with the plumbing inside the heated van.
Okanagan summers are among the hottest in Canada, and some bring days of wildfire smoke. The front fan in the cargo area runs the air conditioning, so you can keep the windows shut on smoky afternoons while the dryers run.
Where do mobile salons work in the Okanagan?
Weddings drive much of the valley's summer salon work. Wineries and lakeside venues from Lake Country to Penticton host many weddings in season, and a hair van parked beside the venue can do the whole bridal party on site. Lake properties and vacation homes fill with summer visitors who want nails or lashes without driving into town.
In Kelowna, clients live in Glenmore, the Upper Mission, Rutland and downtown condos, with West Kelowna across the William R. Bennett Bridge. Seniors' residences are a steady year-round stop. In winter, ski hills such as Big White bring visitors and staff who are a long drive from any salon.
On steep hillside streets you'll often park below the house. Check with the City of Kelowna, the City of West Kelowna or your own municipality about parking and setting up before you book regular stops.
What water and power setup suits a Kelowna salon van?
A ProVanWorks hair van has a shampoo bowl with running hot water, and can add a pedicure basin and a hand-wash sink, all fed from a fresh water reservoir in the utility area and draining to a grey water tank under the floor. The grey tank is the same size as or larger than the reservoir, and both are sized for your day. Grey water goes to an approved disposal point or the sanitary sewer, never a storm drain.
A/C through a long August afternoon, plus dryers and hot tools, takes a bigger battery bank than a coastal route, with high-amp inverters and chargers as add-ons. The batteries charge at Level 2 EV chargers through a J1772 inlet and from shore power through the 50 A inlet (30 A also available) or the 20 A, 120 V inlet. Solar panels make good use of the long, sunny summer days, and a generator (an add-on) covers outdoor weddings far from any outlet. The mobile hair salon van page explains hair washing and dryer power.
What rules apply to a mobile salon in Kelowna?
Kelowna and the Okanagan are in the Interior Health region. Check with Interior Health about personal service rules for hair, nails and lashes before you book clients, and with your municipality about business licences. Tell us what they ask for and we'll build it in.
How does a salon van get from Langley to Kelowna?
The drive is about 350 km: Highway 1 east to Hope, the Coquihalla (Highway 5) to Merritt, then the Okanagan Connector (Highway 97C) to West Kelowna and across the bridge. In good conditions it takes about four hours. Both highways cross high summits where heavy snow is normal from late fall into spring; BC's winter tire and chain rules apply from October 1, and DriveBC posts conditions.
You can pick up at the Langley shop and drive home, ProVanWorks can drive the van to you, or we can ship it on a vehicle transport carrier. For a winter trip, the water system is protected before the van crosses the passes. See delivery across Canada for how delivery is quoted.
Can I have a Kelowna salon van built my way?
Yes. ProVanWorks builds to your own specifications, or you can choose one of our already designed systems and change what you need. The mobile salon vans page shows each layout. If you work summer markets or set up at one venue for a whole weekend, a mobile beauty salon trailer is another option.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Kelowna salon van run the A/C all afternoon?
Yes, with a battery bank sized for it. Tell us how long the A/C and dryers run on a summer day, and we'll size the batteries and suggest solar or a generator for long days.
Will the water freeze in an Okanagan cold snap?
In a ProVanWorks van the water reservoir sits in the utility area inside the insulated, heated van, and the hot water system is built for very low winter temperatures. Overnight, leave the heater on the thermostat, plug into shore power, drain the water system or park in a heated space.
