<!-- Drawing: Side cutaway of a heated, insulated high-roof van set up as a mobile nail salon. The back half is a service room behind a partition with an open doorway, holding a sink with running hot water, a reclining pedicure chair whose footbath is fed with hot water from the reservoir, and a manicure table with a nail lamp facing the client's chair, under close-set ceiling lights. The front half by the side door has customer seating and a cabinet, the battery bank and water sit in the utility area at the very back, and the floor is heated with a grey water tank under it. A strip along the bottom shows the standard hookups on every van and trailer, which can be changed for each build: a water inlet to fill the reservoir or use water on the spot, a grey water outlet opened with an electric switch, a J1772 EV charging inlet, a 50 A power inlet (30 A also available) and a 20 A, 120 V inlet. -->

# Mobile salon vans for Alberta

ProVanWorks builds mobile salon vans at our shop in Langley, BC, and delivers them to hair stylists, nail technicians and lash artists across Alberta. The province runs from chinook country in the south to long, dark winters in the north, with long drives between towns, so every Alberta salon van is insulated and equipped for the place it will work. You can have yours built to your own specifications or pick one of our already designed systems and change what you need.

## What does Alberta's climate mean for a salon van?

Alberta winters are cold everywhere, but they are not all the same. In Calgary, Lethbridge and the south, chinooks bring warm, dry wind off the mountains that can melt the snow in an afternoon, followed by Arctic air again. In Edmonton, Red Deer and the centre, the cold settles in for weeks. In Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray and the north, winter starts earlier, days are short, and cold snaps below −30 °C are a regular part of the season.

ProVanWorks matches the insulation in the walls, roof and floor to where you work, and for Alberta that means much thicker than the roughly 16 mm (5/8 inch) we use for the Lower Mainland. A small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat sends heat through pipes in the floor and walls and through heat exchangers, and a thermostat holds the temperature you choose with the engine off. Warm floors keep a pedicure client comfortable with bare feet, and the plumbing stays inside the heated van so the shampoo bowl, basin and sink keep their hot water. Alberta summers are sunny, and the front fan in the cargo area also runs the air conditioning.

## Which Alberta cities have their own salon van page?

- [Mobile salon vans for Calgary](/mobile-salon-vans/calgary/): chinook swings, foothills weddings and a city spread from Airdrie to Okotoks.
- [Mobile salon vans for Edmonton](/mobile-salon-vans/edmonton/): months of steady cold, overnight plug-ins and suburbs linked by the Anthony Henday.

## Where do mobile salons work across Alberta?

Outside the two big cities, a salon van fits places where clients would otherwise drive a long way for an appointment. Red Deer sits halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Lethbridge and Medicine Hat serve farm and ranch country across the south. Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray are far from the larger centres, and acreages and small towns across the province can be an hour or more from the nearest salon.

The mountain towns of Canmore, Banff and Jasper host weddings and visitors through the year, and a bridal party at a lodge or a backcountry venue is a natural booking for hair, nails and lashes on location. Rodeos and fairs fill small towns on summer weekends. For an event where you stay put all day, a [mobile beauty salon trailer](/custom-work-trailers/beauty-salon-trailer/) is another option.

Long distances between towns shape the power system. A ProVanWorks salon van charges its battery bank at Level 2 EV chargers through a J1772 inlet, or from shore power through the 50 A inlet (30 A also available) or the 20 A, 120 V inlet. When chargers are far apart, or a wedding venue has no outlet, a generator or a bigger battery bank keeps dryers, hot tools and lamps running. Solar panels are another add-on. See the [nail salon van](/mobile-salon-vans/nail-salon-van/) page for a full layout and all [mobile salon vans](/mobile-salon-vans/) for hair and lashes.

## What rules apply to a mobile salon in Alberta?

Rules for personal services are applied locally, so check with your local public health inspector before you book clients, and with each municipality where you plan to park and work about business licences and parking. In a national park town such as Banff or Jasper, ask about business permits there as well. If your service needs a professional licence or certification, check with the body that issues it.

## How does a salon van get from Langley to Alberta?

ProVanWorks uses three main routes into Alberta:

- **To Calgary and the south-central province:** the Coquihalla (Highway 5) to Kamloops, then the Trans-Canada (Highway 1) over Rogers Pass and through Banff, about 1,000 km to Calgary.
- **To Edmonton and the north:** the Coquihalla to Kamloops, north to the Yellowhead (Highway 16) and east through Jasper, about 1,150 km to Edmonton. Grande Prairie and the Peace Country are reached by highways that branch north off the Yellowhead.
- **To Lethbridge and the south:** the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) across southern BC and through the Crowsnest Pass.

Every route crosses mountain passes, so winter deliveries allow for snow, and the water system is protected for the trip. Anywhere in Alberta, ProVanWorks can drive the van to you or ship it on a vehicle transport carrier, or you can pick it up at our Langley shop. ## Frequently asked questions

### Does a salon van for northern Alberta need more insulation than one for Calgary?

Often, yes. ProVanWorks sets the insulation thickness for each build around where you work, so a van for Grande Prairie or Fort McMurray can be built differently from one for Lethbridge. Tell us your area and your coldest working days.

### Can a salon van work rural Alberta without an outlet?

Yes. A ProVanWorks salon van carries its own water and runs on its battery bank. For long days at acreages, small towns or wedding venues, add a generator or a bigger battery bank.
