# Mobile grooming vans for Toronto and the GTA

ProVanWorks builds mobile dog grooming vans at our shop in Langley, BC, and ships them to groomers in Toronto and across the GTA. A Toronto van fights salt, slush and freeze-thaw more than deep cold, and it has to work from the curb outside a condo tower as easily as from a driveway in Oakville.

## How does a Toronto winter wear on a grooming van?

Toronto winters cross the freezing mark again and again. Snow turns to slush in the afternoon and refreezes overnight, and the city and the 400-series highways put down a lot of road salt to keep up. Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario can hit one part of the GTA and miss the next.

Salt is what ages a van here. Brine collects on the frame and in the wheel wells and keeps working on bare metal every time the temperature climbs above zero, so rinse the undercarriage often through the winter.

Inside, slush comes in on the dogs and your boots, and the waterproof floor in a ProVanWorks van lets you wipe it up instead of letting it soak in. Heat comes from a small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat and moves through in-floor and in-wall piping and heat exchangers around the cargo area, with a thermostat holding the temperature you set. See the [cold-weather design](/mobile-grooming-vans/cold-weather-design/) page for the layout.

## Where can a grooming van park in downtown Toronto?

Downtown and midtown appointments usually mean a client in a condo tower and a van at the curb. Underground garages often have low clearance, so check the posted height before you try one, or groom on the street or in the loading area when management allows it. Parking rules, permit zones and loading zones change from street to street, so check with the City of Toronto and the building before you take on a regular client.

On a busy street, the railing at the cargo door keeps the dog inside the van while the door is open. The van carries its own water and auxiliary battery bank, so you never need power or a hose from the building.

## How do GTA groomers plan routes around traffic?

Traffic shapes a GTA grooming business more than distance does. A short run on the 401 or the DVP can take an hour at the wrong time of day, so it pays to cluster appointments by area: a Mississauga day, a Markham day, a day split between Vaughan and Brampton.

The auxiliary batteries in a ProVanWorks van charge from Level 2 EV chargers, which are common at GTA plazas, so a lunch stop can top them up. See [power and EV charging](/mobile-grooming-vans/power-and-ev-charging/) for how the system is set up.

## Can a grooming van stay cool in a Toronto summer?

Yes. Toronto summers are hot and humid, and a closed van with a dryer running heats up fast. A ProVanWorks van has two fans in the cargo area, front and back, and the front one is also the [air conditioning](/van-fan-and-ac-installation/) fan, so the van cools in July as well as heating in January. Optional windows that open add fresh air, and solar panels and side covers (awnings) are available as add-ons.

## How does a van built in Langley get to Toronto?

The ProVanWorks shop is more than 4,000 km from Toronto by road. Shipping method, cost and timing are worked out for each build, so ask about delivery when you request a quote. The [delivery across Canada](/delivery-across-canada/) page explains the general process.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why buy a grooming van from a BC builder for a Toronto winter?

A ProVanWorks van is designed for Canadian winters from the start, and that matters more on the 401 than it does in Langley. Every van has in-floor and in-wall heat, a thermostat and hot water that works in very low temperatures, and Toronto's freeze-thaw winters use them every week.

### Does a grooming van need extra care for Toronto road salt?

Yes, mostly regular washing. Rinse the underside and wheel wells through the winter and have the underside checked each spring before rust spreads.
