# Mobile grooming vans for Calgary groomers

ProVanWorks builds mobile grooming vans in Langley for groomers in Calgary and nearby towns such as Airdrie, Cochrane and Okotoks. Calgary winters swing hard: a chinook can lift the city above freezing within hours, then Arctic air drops it back into deep cold, so a Calgary van has to handle constant freeze and thaw as well as cold snaps below −30 °C. The van reaches Calgary over the Rockies from our shop in BC.

## How do chinooks affect a grooming van in Calgary?

A chinook is a warm, dry wind that comes down off the Rockies and can push Calgary from deep cold to above freezing in a matter of hours. For a grooming van, that cycle is harder than steady cold. Snow melts into slush, then refreezes overnight on steps, door seals and wheel wells. Any water left in an exposed fitting freezes, thaws and freezes again, and each round can open a small crack a little wider.

A ProVanWorks van keeps its water reservoir in the utility area at the back, inside the insulated, heated van, so the water does not ride those swings. For Calgary, ProVanWorks builds the insulation thicker than on a Lower Mainland van, so the cold snaps between chinooks don't pull the heat out of the work area. The thermostat holds the cargo area at the temperature you set whether it is −25 °C or +8 °C outside, which saves you fiddling with the heat every time a chinook arch shows up over the mountains. The waterproof floor takes the slush that comes in on boots and paws. The [cold-weather design](/mobile-grooming-vans/cold-weather-design/) page goes through the system.

## How cold does it get for a Calgary grooming van?

Between chinooks, Arctic air can hold Calgary below −20 °C for a week or more, and the worst cold snaps go below −30 °C. In a ProVanWorks van, a small diesel, gas or electric heater under the seat sends heat through in-floor and in-wall piping and heat exchangers around the cargo area, so the dog stands on a warm floor while you dry it. The hot water system is built to work in very low winter temperatures.

Batteries need the same care. If the auxiliary battery bank uses lithium cells, they must not be charged below 0 °C unless warmed first. In a ProVanWorks van the battery bank lives in the utility area inside the insulated, heated van, and it charges from Level 2 EV chargers, so a public charger near a lunch stop can top it up.

## How do Calgary groomers work a city this spread out?

Calgary covers a lot of ground. Newer communities on the edges, like Mahogany, Seton and Evanston, have wide streets and front garages, while inner-city neighbourhoods like Bridgeland and Mount Royal have tighter parking and older homes. Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere and Okotoks add highway time between clients.

When the City declares a snow route parking ban, you cannot leave the van on designated snow routes, so check with the City of Calgary before booking stops on main roads in winter.

## How does the van get from Langley to Calgary?

There are two main routes. The Trans-Canada (Highway 1) runs through Kamloops, Revelstoke, Rogers Pass, Golden and Banff. The Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) crosses southern BC and enters Alberta through the Crowsnest Pass. Both cross several mountain passes with heavy winter snow, and Highway 1 near Rogers Pass closes at times for avalanche control. The water system is protected for the winter trip. Ask about delivery when you request a quote, and see [delivery across Canada](/delivery-across-canada/) for how that works.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I turn the heat down in a Calgary grooming van during a chinook?

You can, but the thermostat does it for you. Set it once and it holds the cargo area at that temperature as the outside air swings, which matters because a wet dog still chills at +5 °C and the cold usually comes back by evening.

### How far is Calgary from the ProVanWorks shop?

Calgary is more than 900 km from our Langley shop by the Trans-Canada, a long day's drive in summer and often two days in winter. If that is more driving than you want, ask about delivery when you request a quote.

### Does a Calgary grooming van need air conditioning?

Yes. Calgary summers are short but sunny, and a closed van with a dryer running warms up fast on a July afternoon. A ProVanWorks van has two cargo-area fans, and the front one also runs the air conditioning, controlled by the same thermostat as the winter heat. See [how fans and A/C work in our vans](/van-fan-and-ac-installation/).
