# Mobile grooming vans for Burnaby groomers

ProVanWorks builds heated mobile grooming vans at our Langley shop for groomers who work in Burnaby. A Burnaby route can include tower clients around Metrotown and Brentwood in the morning and a snowy hillside street near Burnaby Mountain in the afternoon, and the van has to handle both.

## Does Burnaby Mountain get more snow than the rest of Burnaby?

Yes. Burnaby Mountain rises well above the rest of the city, and the SFU campus on top often has snow when Metrotown has only rain. The slopes of the mountain and the hills of North Burnaby around Capitol Hill can stay icy after the flats along the Fraser have cleared.

A grooming van working up there has to stay warm while parked on a cold hillside for an hour or more. In a ProVanWorks van, a small heater under the seat (diesel, gas or electric) sends heat through pipes in the floor and walls and through heat exchangers around the cargo area, and the thermostat holds the setting. The hot water system is built to keep working in very low temperatures. Good winter tires and a plan for snow days are still up to you. The [winter mobile grooming guide](/guides/winter-mobile-grooming/) covers how groomers plan routes around snow.

## Where do you park a grooming van near Metrotown or Brentwood?

Usually on the street or in a surface loading zone. The towers around Metrotown, Brentwood and Lougheed have underground parkades with low clearance, and a grooming van is usually too tall to get in. Ask the building manager where a service vehicle can stop, and check with the City of Burnaby about parking rules on residential streets nearby.

Tower clients often bring the dog down in the elevator, so parking close to the lobby saves time for both of you. Because a ProVanWorks van is self-contained, there is no need to ask the building for water or power. That also makes Burnaby's density work in your favour: you can see several dogs in the same few blocks without long drives in between.

## How far is Burnaby from the Langley shop?

Burnaby is a straight run west on Highway 1 from Langley, over the Port Mann Bridge. Outside rush hour the drive usually takes less than an hour, so most Burnaby groomers come to the shop rather than wait for delivery.

Pickup day includes a full walk-through inside the van: how to start the heater, set the thermostat, fill and drain the tanks, and charge the batteries. If you want to see your van partway through the build, email info@provanworks.com to book a time.

## Can I charge the grooming van's batteries in Burnaby?

Yes. The battery bank in a ProVanWorks grooming van charges from Level 2 EV chargers, the same public chargers found at many shopping centres and parking lots. With a dense Burnaby route you can often plan a lunch break near a charger without leaving your area. The [power and EV charging](/mobile-grooming-vans/power-and-ev-charging/) page explains the setup.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a heated van worth it if most of my Burnaby clients are in condos?

Yes. Condo dogs still come out to the van in the rain and cold, and a warm work area with hot water lets them dry comfortably. Lights spaced about every 30 cm along the work area also help on dark December afternoons, since there are no shadows on the dog while you trim.

### Do you do spray-on bed liners for Burnaby trucks?

Yes. The Langley shop sprays [pickup truck bed liners](/spray-on-bed-liners/) and [cargo floor liners for work vans](/spray-on-bed-liners/work-vans/), about the same drive from Burnaby as picking up a grooming van. It also does van wraps, if you want your grooming van branded before it comes home.

### Does a Burnaby grooming van need air conditioning?

Yes, for summer. A van parked on a sunny street outside a Metrotown or Brentwood tower, with the dryer running between dogs, gets hot inside long before the afternoon is over. The front fan in a ProVanWorks van also runs the A/C, and the same thermostat that heats the van in winter cools it in summer. Read more about [van fans and A/C](/van-fan-and-ac-installation/).
